Garmin Approach S4 GPS Golf Watch 2021: An HONEST Review

In this post, I’m going to be reviewing the Garmin Approach S4 GPS watch and giving my opinion on how it performed on the course and whether or not it’s worth getting. I’ll also show you the cheapest place I could find it for sale, so continue reading.

In short, here’s my quick review of the Garmin Approach S4: The S4 is a fairly solid and well-made golf watch but there are newer and better models I’d recommend today. Some watches like the Garmin Approach S20 are cheaper and do the exact same thing. Others like the Garmin Approach S40 aren’t that much more and have more advanced features like fitness tracking and Autoshot.

If that’s all the info you were looking for then great. If you want a more detailed review and the best place to pick one up, continue reading.

Garmin Approach S4 First Impressions

This is a bit of an older golf watch from Garmin but it was one of the premium watches when it came out.

It’ll show you the green shape and the distance to the front, middle, and back of the green.

It’ll also keep track of how many fairways you hit left and right.

Garmin Approach S4 Features

Compared to some of the newer golf watches on the market, the S4 actually doesn’t have the best features (fitness tracking, auto hazard tracking).

It has a touchscreen display and is easy to read in sunlight, but in our opinion, a watch of this price should have a color display.

It comes loaded with over 40,000 courses worldwide and has a battery that will last 2 rounds.

Garmin Approach S4 Design

I’m not the biggest fan of wearing watches so I didn’t find the S4 to be the most comfortable thing to wear.

Also, I personally liked the way some of the newer Garmin golf watches fitted.

Another thing I didn’t like as much as others were the user experience and the responsiveness

It wasn’t bad or anything like that but some of the newer watches are much easier to use.

How Did The S4 Perform?

This is the main thing that really matters in a GPS and even though the S4 has some downfalls, the performance was great.

The battery life lasted a full 2 rounds and the distances were always within about 5 yards of the course markers.

The one thing I didn’t really like about it was that you had to manually input the hazards.

Pros

  • It comes with text and email alerts.
  • You can move the pin around to get a precise distance.
  • It’ll last 2 full rounds no problem.
  • It’s just as accurate as any.

Cons

  • It’s a pretty expensive golf watch.
  • You have to manually enter the distances to hazards.
  • It’s not the most straightforward watch and will take some time to learn.

The Breakdown

  • Performance Score: 9
  • Price Score: 7
  • Ease Of Use Score: 7
  • My Personal Score: 8

Is It Worth It?

Overall, even though it’s a fairly solid golf watch, there are newer and better models that I’d recommend.

Some watches out there like the Garmin Approach S20 are cheaper and pretty much do the same thing.

If you want some more advanced features like fitness tracking and Autoshot, there is the Garmin Approach S40 watch.
