Nikon Coolshot 20 Laser Rangefinder Review – An HONEST Opinion

Today, we’re going to be reviewing the Nikon Coolshot 20 rangefinder and I’ll be sharing my honest thoughts after testing out this distance finder. I’ve tried and tested quite a few of these devices so that being said, how did it stack up to the rest?

Long story short, the Coolshot 20 is a great entry-level rangefinder that’s not overly expensive and does the job it was designed to do. It’s super small and lightweight, seems to be well built and rainproof, and it comes with a 2-year warranty. I found it really easy to use since I’ve used other rangefinders in the past (some people had troubles with long distances) and it was just as accurate as any of the others. Overall, I definitely liked this rangefinder for both its price and its performance and would give it a thumbs up.

If that’s all the info you were looking for then great. But if you want a more detailed review of the rangefinder, be sure to watch the full video or blog post below!

Nikon Coolshot 20 First Impressions

What I liked most about the Coolshot is that it’s a super clean and simple device that doesn’t have a bunch of bells and whistles and is reasonably priced.

It’s supposed to read targets anywhere from 6-550 yards with a 6x magnification. I’m not really sure why you’d need to read something 550 yards away but I guess it’s cool to have the option. It weighs about 125g and can easily fit in 1 hand.

It doesn’t come with a pulse lock or anything like that (would be nice) or slope technology but it does the job it was made to do well. It also has a carrying case so you don’t break it.

How Did The Rangefinder Perform?

For the short time we’ve had the Coolshot, it seems to be really made well and durable. We compared it to some of the other “high-end” models and they were pretty much the same in terms of accuracy (within 1 yard).

It definitely wasn’t the quickest to lock in on the target which was one of the downsides but it wasn’t the biggest deal to me. Some people have shaky hands so this could be a bit tricky (a lot of people complain but it’s not the rangefinders fault).

Considering the price, the Coolshot did everything we expected it to do in terms of accuracy and that’s why I’d give it a thumbs up.

Who’s It Best For/Not For?

If it’s your first rangefinder and you’re not a pro golfer or anything like that, I’d recommend the Coolshot for sure. If you golf a lot and need to know the exact distance with elevation added in, you might want to go with something that has slope.

But for me, this was definitely good enough.

Pros

  • It’s compact and lightweight.
  • It’s weatherproof and seems to be well made.
  • I found it really easy to use.
  • The price is reasonable.
  • It comes with a 2-year warranty.

Cons

  • It could be difficult to use if you have big hands.
  • It’s a bit tricky reading targets far away (500+ yards).
  • There is no on-screen target lock.

The Breakdown

  • Performance score: 9
  • Price score: 8
  • Comfort & feel score: 9
  • Personal score: 8.5

My Final Thoughts

Overall, I really liked the Coolshot 20 as an entry-level rangefinder that’s not going to break the bank. It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles like other models but it does 1 job and 1 job really well (distance).

I found it just as accurate as of the other high-end rangefinders and it was easier to use. It was a bit harder locking onto the target but that’s something you get used to after a couple uses. That’s why I’d recommend picking one up.
