Having a device to tell you the exact yardage to different parts of the course is one of the best ways you can really dial in your distance control. In this article, I’m going to be going over the 3 best golf rangefinders so you can get the highest quality device possible, and I’ll also talk about the cheapest place to pick each of them up.
When we were trying out all the rangefinders we ranked them all based on how they performed on the course, how durable they were, and also how much they cost. We tried the best we could to find a cheaper option as well as a more expensive one.
That being said, here are the best golf rangefinders:

#3: TecTecTec VPRO500 Rangefinder
This is by far my favorite budget rangefinder since it’s fairly inexpensive but still offers great performance and will read distances to flags, hazards, and trees to within a couple of yards (to within about 4 yards). I’ve been able to test a few different units in the same price range and the VPRO is definitely better.
I really liked the continuous scan function it has (press the button and get multiple readings in one go vs having to press the button every time you want a reading) and it can read distances up to 540 yards away (which is all you really need on the golf course).
It’s also water-resistant (not waterproof) and has held up nicely for us so far.
Let’s talk PROS:
- The price can’t be beaten (by far the best in its price range).
- It’s one of the quicker reading rangefinders I’ve used.
- It’s super simple to use.
- It’s small enough to fit in your pocket.
Now the CONS:
- It’s not quite as accurate as of the more expensive units (but close).
- It fogged up a little bit when it was rainy out.
- It’s black and can be tough to see in the cart (I’ve forgotten it a few times).
Overall, if you’re tight on a budget, this will be the one for you. Here’s a demo video:

#2: Bushnell Tour V4 Rangefinder
I’ve pretty much always used Bushnell rangefinders (golf & hunting) because they’re so accurate and consistent, and the V4 is just that. It’s a bit more expensive than a lot of the other rangefinders but it’s much easier to use and will help people with shaky hands.
It’s nice that you can switch from slope to non-slope mode with the flick of a switch (slope basically takes into account elevation and gives you an adjusted reading). It’s not legal for tournament play but it’ll be super useful if you’re playing for fun.
Another thing I really liked about this is that it actually vibrates when you lock onto the target so you know for sure you’re getting the right distance (some don’t have this and it’s a lot harder for people with shaky hands).
The PROS:
- It’s really easy to use and get accurate/quick readings.
- It’s comfortable to use and it’s small.
- It seems to be accurate to within a couple of yards.
The CONS:
- It’s quite a bit more expensive than the VPRO 500.
- It’s quite hard reading targets 250+ yards away (most can’t hit that far anyway).
Overall, one of the more high-quality distance finders on the market. Here’s a demo video:

#1: Nikon Coolshot Pro Rangefinder
This rangefinder was actually rated “Best Rangefinder of 2019” and it’s still at the top of my list going into 2020. It’s the most expensive unit on this list but it’s well worth it if you’re able to pay up for it.
A really cool feature it has is that it’ll also show you the straight line distance and the slope distance on the same screen (which was really useful for me). You don’t have to mess around switching between screens like most.
I like it over the V4 because it has image stabilization (it reduces the sensitivity of moving and vibrations), it’s waterproof, it has a longer laser, and the warranty is better. This rangefinder is by far the easiest to use. Some are tough because you need to hold it on the target for a few seconds, but you won’t have that problem with this rangefinder.
The PROS:
- It’s rated for up to 1200 yards (don’t know why you’d need that much anyway).
- It has a color OLED display which is easy to read in low light.
- It’s small and lightweight.
The CONS:
- The price tag (all the benefits are worth it in my opinion).
Overall, it’s clearly the best rangefinder on the market for me and that’s why I’d highly recommend it. Here’s a demo video:

Final Thoughts
If you’re in the market for a new rangefinder and want the best one possible, these 3 will be perfect for you. They all perform really well, are accurate, durable, and the price is right.
If you’re a bit tighter on a budget, go with the VPRO500. If you want a more advanced yardage finder and will be using it quite often, go with the Bushnell V4 or Nikon Pro.
