We all know the guy who’s a little bit dishonest on the golf course. Maybe it’s not counting some of the duffed shots, magically finding their lost ball, or whatever else comes into their head. In this post, I’ll show you some of the top ways people cheat at golf.
Here’s how you cheat at golf:
- Move the ball marker.
- Chapstick the driver.
- Life Saver tee.
There are a number of different ways to cheat on the golf course but these have been some of the sneakiest I’ve ever seen. If you want to use them yourself go right ahead but be sure to keep a lookout if you’re playing your buddy for some cash. Check out the video or continue reading to see the three methods.
Moving The Ball Marker
This is one that probably happens more than you think. There are different variations of this that aren’t too bad and are fine to let slide. If you really want to cheat on the greens (or watch for someone else cheating) then here’s what you do.
Step #1: Mark your ball by putting the ball marker in front. Most people will put the marker behind the ball but if you see someone marking their ball from the front then there’s probably something up. You should be using a bigger ball marker to get the best results out of it.
Step #2: Pick up your ball and clean it off. Everything is pretty normal up until this point and there’s been no cheating. Once your ball is nice and clean you’ll want to place it back in front of the marker. You’re now an inch or so closer to the hole.
Step #3: This is where you’ll want to take another read of the green. Mark your ball again by placing the marker in front of your ball. Pick your ball up again and give it a cleaning. Place it back in front of the ball. You’re now 2 inches closer to the pin.
Chapsticking The Driver
You’ve probably seen in baseball where the pitcher will have some sort of gel on their fingers to help them grip the ball better. The same thing can happen in golf. Using something like chapstick on your clubface will actually reduce a lot of the spin. When you have less spin you’ll have fewer hooks and slices. Here’s how you can do it.
Step #1: Put a bunch of chapstick on your lips. It might look a bit weird if you’re rubbing chapstick on your fingers so you’ll need to make it look as natural as possible.
Step #2: Rub your finger over your lips and put some of that chapstick on your clubface. It’ll help you hit a straighter shot and is a pretty sneaky way of cheating, Try it for yourself or watch for one of your buddies doing it.
The Life Saver Tee
The final thing you can do, and this one is pretty slick, is using a green Life Saver (the circular candy) to tee your ball up in the fairway. If you’re on a Par 5 and you want to get there in two then having your ball on a tee will give you a better chance of getting there. The candy is green so nobody will be able to see it.
Step #1: Take the green Life Saver out and drop it on the ground. It’ll look kinda funny if you try to set something down so make it look as natural as possible.
Step #2: Pretend you’re picking up twigs around your ball and cleaning some mud off. This is completely fine to do and nobody will suspect a thing. Quickly nudge your ball so it sits on the Life Saver. Stand over the ball and take your swing as usual. It’ll be slightly elevated and much easier to hit.
There you have it. These are some of the more unique ways I’ve seen or heard someone cheating. I’m not telling you to cheat but if you have someone who’s always dishonest on the course then you’ll have to even out the playing field a bit. If you’re not a cheat then just keep an eye out for someone trying to pull one of these tricks out of the bag.
