Callaway Steelhead XR Irons Review – An HONEST Opinion

Today, we’re going to be reviewing the Callaway Steelhead XR irons and I’ll be sharing my honest thoughts after testing them out. I’ve always been a big fan of Callaway clubs and have always used them, so that being said, how did it perform for me?

Long story short, I found these clubs super comfortable to swing and the sound and feel through impact were really solid. For me, they were near the top of the list in terms of distance and forgiveness, which would benefit a lot of golfers. They also still give the workability (fade/draw) a lot of low handicaps would want so that’s another plus. They’re middle of the pack in terms of price, but other than that, there wasn’t much we could see wrong with these clubs and that’s why I’d give them a thumbs up.

If that’s all the info you were looking for then great. But if you want a more detailed review of the irons, be sure to watch the full video or blog post below!

Callaway Steelhead XR First Impressions

These clubs have been out for a while now and it’s just recently I decided to test them out, seeing as how I’m a big Callaway fan…

The first thing I noticed was the mid-sized width of the club and the long head, which I haven’t always been a fan of, but we’ll jump to our conclusion after testing it out.

Before I tested it out I was told it had a relatively small offset so it would help out with off-center hits but would still give the low handicap the ability to work the ball around (draw/fade).

How Did The Irons Perform?

The first thing I noticed with these clubs is how solid they felt at impact, which was a lot better than some of the other irons I’ve tested in the past.

The next thing I noticed was how much longer and more consistent I was with them compared to the Taylormade M series irons.

I’ve tested quite a few different irons in the past and I’ll definitely say these were near the top of my list in terms of distance and also forgiveness.

The biggest difference for me was in the 4 and 5 irons. I’ve never been able to hit them that great, but for whatever reason, they felt extremely fast and solid.

Overall, the performance was super good with these clubs and I was really pleased. Here’s a demo video:

Who’s It Best For/Not For?

I found that these irons produced a bit more spin than some of the other clubs which would definitely benefit someone like myself with a slower swing speed.

That being said, I still feel like lower handicaps would like these irons as well (more than the original XR and Apex CF16 irons). I found them super comfortable to swing and the distance and also the workability was still there.

  • I found them super comfortable to swing and the sound/feel was solid.
  • They were near the top of my list for distance and forgiveness.
  • They still provide the workability some low handicaps would want.

  • They were middle of the pack in terms of price.
  • Other than that, not much negative things to say.

The Breakdown

  • Performance score: 10
  • Price score: 7
  • Durability score: 9
  • Personal score: 8.5

My Final Thoughts

If you’re a Callaway fan like myself, you’d definitely enjoy swinging these clubs.

The performance spoke for itself, the feel was solid through impact, and the forgiveness was there. They’re definitely one of my favorites and that’s why I’d give them a thumbs up and recommend.
