I’ve been paying attention to the types of irons a lot of people are using and the majority of them are actually using the wrong ones and it’s hurting their game. This article will talk about the 3 best mid handicap irons so you can get the ones that’ll fit your game the best, and I’ll also talk about the cheapest place to pick each of them up.
When we were trying out all the irons we ranked them all based on how long they were, how versatile they were, and also how much they cost. We tried the best we could to find a cheaper option as well as a more expensive one.
That being said, here are the best irons for mid handicaps:
- Cobra F9 Speedback.
- Taylormade M6.
- Cobra King F7.

#3: Cobra King F7 Irons
Even though these clubs came out in 2017, I still feel they’re a great club for mid handicappers because the performance is just as good as any and they’re extremely affordable. There have been newer versions of this club released over the years but they are going to be a lot more money. These still do the job perfectly well.
They’re still a forgiving iron but they also have a decent amount of feedback and workability (which you’ll definitely want as you start getting better). They come in a standard and jumbo size but I think you’d want to stick with the standard.
The long irons are designed to increase forgiveness and height while the short irons are more like blades for max accuracy. That’s exactly what a mid handicap golfer should be looking for. If you can find these irons (new or used) then I think you’d really like them.
Let’s talk PROS:
- They’re half the price of some of the other irons (but still close in terms of performance).
- I found the long irons easier to hit than a lot of competitors.
Now the CONS:
- The irons all feel and sound difference (which could give mixed signals).
- They felt a little bit hollow at impact (didn’t impact performance).
Overall, one of the better irons on the market that won’t break the bank. Check the price on Amazon. Here’s a demo video:
#2: Taylormade M6 Irons
These are some of the best game improvement irons on the market today and for me, they were the longest of the three irons. I’ve never been the biggest fan of the M series clubs from Taylormade but everything has changed when they released these irons. They’re one of my favorites for the majority of the average weekend golfers.
If you’ve ever hit the previous M4 irons, the new M6 irons sounded a lot better and also gave me a higher launch angle as well. Pretty much everything has been improved, in my opinion, The sound, feel, forgiveness, and distance.
They weren’t as forgiving as my #1 pick and they didn’t have as much workability, but if you’re looking for distance, the M6’s will be one of the best. I think these irons would still work really well when you improve your game even more too.
How about the PROS:
- The longest of the 3 irons.
- They sounded great and gave a good amount of feedback.
- They had a confidence-boosting high launch.
Now the CONS:
- They’re fairly expensive.
- They don’t offer the most control and workability (more distance and forgiveness).
- They’re a little bit heavier than the old M4 irons.
Overall, one of the better game improvement irons on the market. Check the price on Amazon. Here’s a demo video:
#1: Cobra F9 Speedback Irons
These are definitely my favorite mid handicap iron and even though they weren’t quite as long as the previous M6, they were more forgiving and also offered more versatility (shot shaping and shots from the rough).
As you get better, distance becomes less important and you’re more focused on accuracy and ball shaping (I found these irons were great for that). The M6 was still pretty decent but these seemed to work better for my game. I’ve always liked Cobra clubs so that might have made a difference for me.
They’re also connected to Cobra Connect which is really cool because it’ll automatically track your stats (you can go to the app after your round and see your data and what needs to be improved). You can see distances, averages, and a few other cool things.
The PROS:
- They were the most forgiving of the 3 irons (for me).
- They had a good amount of feedback (on mishits).
- They felt and sounded really solid.
- The short irons had great control and were accurate.
The CONS:
- They’re an expensive iron.
- They weren’t the longest for me (but was pretty close).
Overall, the F9 irons were definitely my favorite for mid handicaps (I know because I am one) and I’d highly recommend them. Check the price on Amazon. Here’s a demo video:
Final Thoughts
If you’re a mid handicap golfer and are in the market for a new set of irons, these three will be great options. They all perform really well and are great for when you start getting better. The iron set you go with will all depend on your budget and what exactly you’re looking for.
If you’re tight on a budget, go with the Cobra F7 irons. They aren’t quite as good as the F9 but I still think you’ll get 80% of the features. If you want something that’ll bomb the ball long and straight down the fairway, go with the M6. If you want as much forgiveness as possible, go with the F9 irons.
