The GX-7 is a club that’s supposed to be as long as your driver, as accurate as your fairway wood, and will help you eliminate 3-4 bad shots per round. I was pretty intrigued by the whole concept and in this post, I’m going to be talking about how good the GX-7 X-Metal driver actually is.
In my opinion, the GX-7 is somewhere in between a driver and a 3 wood. It wasn’t quite as long as my driver but it was better than my 3 wood. I’ll have to agree with them in that it’s as accurate as your woods and could result in a few more fairways hit per round. The spin levels were a little higher compared to my driver but it was quite close. That being said, if you have a slower swing speed then this could potentially work for you.
It’s not something I’d use myself because I actually really like hitting driver and don’t struggle too much with it. The loft isn’t much less than my 3 wood (14 degrees) so I don’t really see a point in having it in my bag. If you’re an older golfer with a slower swing speed you might want to give it a try. What Is The GX-7?
The basic concept behind this driver is that it’s supposed to eliminate a few bad shots per round, is just as long as your driver, is equally as accurate as your fairway wood, and will produce less spin overall.
That’s asking quite a lot and it’s pretty hard to tell whether or not products like this actually work. There are so many gimmick products being shown on TV and most of them are complete junk.
It’s priced at around $200 which isn’t all that bad if it actually works. Most drivers these days are quite a bit more than that so if it works as they say then it could be a pretty good deal.
Since it’s a bit smaller than a standard driver and is the same length as your 3 wood, you can actually hit it off the turf if you want. I do prefer my own 3 wood for this but it could be an option for someone who doesn’t want to buy a driver and wood. Also, here’s the commercial they made for it (classic golf infomercial).
Accuracy
The main reason someone would get a club like this is to improve their accuracy off the tee. Most “average” players struggle with the driver and tend to hook or slice it big time. If they can hit the fairway more often and still have the distance then they should be able to lower scores.
They said the GX-7 is supposed to be just as accurate as your 3 wood and I was somewhat expecting that because they were the same length and the loft is similar (the loft was a couple of degrees less). I wouldn’t say the GX-7 is going to fix your hook or slice but I do think it’ll help hit more fairways.
The amount of spin was between my driver and fairway wood. It gave me more spin compared to my driver but it was quite a bit less than my fairway wood. All in all, I’ll have to agree with them that the GX is just as accurate as my wood.
I don’t have the fastest swing speed in the world so I can’t comment on how it’ll perform for everyone but if you have a low to mid swing speed then you might want to give it a try.
Distance
Even though distance shouldn’t be the main thing a mid to high handicap player should be looking for, it’s still something you should expect from your driver. They said it’ll go the same distance as your driver but I didn’t find that to be the case.
In my experience, the GX was somewhere around 10 yards shorter on average. It was still longer than my fairway wood but it was no driver. Compared to my 3 wood, it was around 5 yards longer than that. The launch angle was identical to my driver.
I think it’s designed more for higher handicaps with lower swing speeds so if you have a faster swing speed then you’ll most likely get less distance using the GX. I let my dad give it a try (who’s getting older and can’t swing as fast) and it seemed to work really well for him. I also gave it to my girlfriend and it worked surprisingly well for her as well.
If you’re willing to sacrifice some distance to be in the fairway more often, I think you’ll be able to lower scores. If this is something that could help with that I see no reason why you wouldn’t give it a try.

Pros
- The price point is pretty good.
- It’s more accurate than your driver.
- It can work from the turf as well.
Cons
- It’s not a game-changing club like the commercial suggests.
- You’ll probably get less distance out of it.
- It’s a little bit on the whippy side.
The Verdict
Overall, if you’re a higher handicap player or someone who doesn’t have the fastest swing speeds, you might want to give the GX-7 a try. It’s not something I’d add to my bag but I don’t think I’m the target market for something like this. It looks like it’s more for senior or female golfers. I’m pretty sure you can try it out for 30 days to see how you like it.
The price point is reasonable and it could be something you’d use instead of your driver AND fairway wood. Yeah, it’s not going to go as far as your driver but how often to you bomb it long and straight down the fairway with your driver? I think you’ll be able to lower scores if you hit more fairways. So, if you think this could do that then you should give it a try.
